RV & Camper Storage in Nags Head & the Outer Banks
Level, secure space for a camper, travel trailer, boat trailer and the gear that goes with it.
If you own property in Nags Head, you already know the Outer Banks is a different animal. Seasonal turnover, nor’easters, and sandy soils mean self-storage problems show up faster and cost more when they’re ignored. We’re a local Nags Head crew that lives with the same conditions you do — and we answer the phone when you call.
Where a rig sleeps
A camper that lives on a street or a driveway in Nags Head is a camper that is taking up a driveway and taking salt air from both directions. A stored rig sits on a level pad, out of the traffic, where you can reach it on a Sunday without moving anything first.
We also store the gear that goes with a rig — a boat on a trailer, a generator, an awning, the bikes that live in the back of the truck. Some people store the whole towable as one unit so it is one transaction and one thing to go and pick up.
The storm week
Before a hurricane the practical question is not where the camper is parked, it is where the water is going. Storm surge is the abnormal rise of water generated by a storm over and above the predicted tide, and on the Outer Banks it reaches the Sound side as well as the ocean side.
Surge-side inundation happens on the Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, and the low ground between the dune and the maritime forest collects water in a bowl. A rig stored on the Sound side of an island during a named storm is a rig stored in the wrong county, and we will talk that through rather than take the space.
What the flood maps say about the site
Ask for the flood zone of the site, not the zone of the town. A Special Flood Hazard Area is the ground that will be inundated by the flood with a one-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any year, and in this region the maps put a great deal of Dare and Currituck County inside it.
A higher zone is not the same as a safe zone. The coastal high hazard areas, mapped V and VE, carry additional hazard from wind and wave action, and the base flood elevation on the map is the number that tells you how high the water comes. Any operator worth talking to can tell you the site and the elevation.
Pricing, access, and the paperwork
Rig storage is priced by the length of the rig and the surface it sits on, and covered space for a camper costs more than a bare pad. Longer terms bring the rate down, and the shoulder months — after Labor Day, before the spring — are the easiest time to find a space.
Two things to confirm in writing before you pay: the gate and access hours, and the tax. The combined state, local and transit sales and use tax rate in both Dare and Currituck counties is 6.75 percent, and the storage of a motor vehicle is exempt when the charge is stated separately on your invoice — so ask how the invoice is broken out.
What to expect on the day of your rv & camper storage
When you call, we’ll ask a few quick questions about the job, the property, and the timing, and give you a real window for the visit — not a vague “sometime between 8 and 5.” On the day, we show up when we said we would, do the work we quoted, and clean up after ourselves before we leave. You get a written record of what was done, what we found, and what — if anything — you should keep an eye on down the road. If something about the job changes once we’re on site, we tell you and re-quote before we do the extra work. No surprises on the invoice, ever.
- We confirm the appointment and a tight arrival window the day before.
- We arrive with the right equipment and parts for the job.
- We do the work to the scope we quoted and document what we find.
- We clean up and leave a written record of the service.
What affects the cost of self-storage in Nags Head
- Unit size and whether it is climate controlled — a conditioned unit costs more than the same footprint unconditioned.
- How long you keep it — a month-to-month rate and a year-long rate are different products.
- Ground level or reached by a ramp, and whether the site is concrete or gravel.
- Vehicle, boat and rig storage is priced by the space the hull or the rig takes, not by the square foot of a unit.
- Access hours and whether the gate is staffed or on a code — a lot beside a residential use in Currituck County is limited to between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M.
How our self-storage process works
- You call and tell us what you are storing, roughly how much of it, and how long.
- We size it — a unit you can fill without paying for air you do not use — and confirm the site, the surface and the access.
- You get the rate, the term, the gate hours and the tax treatment in writing before you move anything in.
- We go over the rules with you on the walk-through: what goes in, what does not, and what the agreement says if the rent stops.
Signs you may need this service
- Your garage is full of things that are not really garage things, and the humidity is getting into them.
- A second home that is full in summer and empty in September, and furniture that has nowhere to go in between.
- A boat, camper or jet ski that spends half the year in a driveway taking up space and taking salt.
- You are heading into a storm season and a low-lying garage or driveway is where your things are.
How to choose a self-storage company on the Outer Banks
If you’re comparing quotes for rv & camper storage, here’s what we’d tell a neighbor to ask before they hire anyone — the same questions we’d want asked of us. When you’re comparing self-storage on the Outer Banks, ask what the unit actually is — climate controlled or not — and what the site surface is, because concrete and gravel behave very differently under a boat trailer and in a hard rain. Ask how many times a day you can reach the unit and whether access hours are limited; a lot beside a residential use in Currituck County is restricted to between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. Ask for the flood zone of the site rather than of the town, and how the rent is taxed — the combined rate in Dare and Currituck is 6.75 percent, and motor vehicle storage is exempt when the charge is separately stated on your invoice. Then ask what the agreement says if you fall behind: the facility has a lien on your property, it cannot be enforced until 15 days after the rent is due, and you keep a right of redemption before a sale. A red flag is a facility that cannot answer any of that plainly.
Why a local Outer Banks crew matters for this work
The Outer Banks isn’t the mainland, and self-storage done here has to account for barrier-island conditions the inland doesn’t see — salt air, a high water table, wind tides, seasonal rental overload, and named storms that show up faster than the weather app suggests. A local Nags Head crew knows which neighborhoods have which soil, which lots flood at a normal high tide, and which conditions age your self-storage faster than the manual says. We also get back to you quickly in July when a mainland company can’t — because we’re already here, on the island, working every week. That local knowledge is the difference between a fix that lasts and one that fails next season.
Serving Nags Head and the surrounding Outer Banks
We base our self-storage operation in Nags Head and run service calls across Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores and the rest of the Outer Banks we serve every week. Because we’re local, we can be at your property faster than a mainland company that has to drive out — and we’re here for the follow-up if something needs a second look. If you’re anywhere on the barrier island, give us a call and we’ll tell you whether you’re in our regular route.
The bottom line for Nags Head property owners: Self-Storage is cheaper to stay ahead of than to fix after it fails. We serve Nags Head and Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores every week, and we’d rather do a $300 maintenance visit today than a $3,000 emergency call next month. Call us — we’ll tell you which one you actually need.
RV & Camper Storage — frequently asked questions
Is it safe to store an RV on the Outer Banks during hurricane season?
The risk is flood, not wind, and it depends entirely on the site. We will tell you the flood zone and the base flood elevation for the pad, and we will tell you when a location is a bad bet — a site on the Sound side, or one inside the Special Flood Hazard Area, is a different proposition from one on high ground. Ask for the numbers and make your own call.
Can I store my camper and my boat trailer together?
Usually, and it is simpler than two units. A boat on a trailer and a camper are both towables, and the space is priced by what it takes. We will measure what you have, including the trailer tongue, the jack, and the clearance you need to pull back out, and we will tell you if a single pad does not work.
How long can a rig sit before it needs attention?
A stored camper still wants a look. Tires lose pressure sitting still, the chassis weathers, and a rig that has been outside over a summer needs the seals, the awning and the plumbing checked before it goes back on the road. Ask us what we check and when. If you are storing it for more than a season, that is worth a conversation.
