Seasonal Septic Service calendar

Septic care before hurricane season (June through November)

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 — what to do to your septic system before it starts, and what to check after a storm passes.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and every Outer Banks septic owner should know what that season actually is: not a storm event, but six months of standing water risk to the least waterproof part of your property. A septic system is soil and gravity; a hurricane season is water arriving from above and below at once. The care calendar is short, and it all fits before the first named storm.

Before the season: pump if the tank is due — a half-full tank has room for storm-week water use; a full one does not, and the $300 to $500 band a standard pump-out costs is the cheapest surge preparation on the list. Check that covers and risers are seated and rated for their bury; a loose lid in flood water is a contamination path. Know where your cleanout is. If the system has a pump tank, confirm the alarm works now — power outages and pump failures arrive together in September, and an alarm you have never tested is an alarm you do not have.

During a storm event the rules are simple and mostly about water: minimize what goes into the system while the ground is saturated, because a drainfield that is already full of rain cannot accept anything, and if the power is out, a dosed system's pump is out with it. If flooding covers the tank or the drainfield, treat the water in the yard as unsafe — it may contain effluent — and keep everyone out of it.

After the water leaves: look before you flush. Surfacing effluent or a yard that stays wet long after the storm means the field was submerged or damaged, and that is an inspection visit, not a hope. Do not pump a tank that is flooded until the ground water has dropped — an empty tank in saturated earth can shift or float, which turns a maintenance call into a repair. And if the system surged salt water, say so when you call: saltwater infiltration is a thing we check for on this beach, and it tells the inspection what to look for.

The season's rule: empty before, quiet during, inspect after — call before June 1 and the first item is done.

/* `bottom-0` + `pb-[env(safe-area-inset-bottom)]` keeps the bar clear of the home indicator on a notched device. The `sm:hidden` is what makes it mobile-only: from 640px up the header carries the number, and two of them on one screen is a duplicate, not a reinforcement. THE BAR IS RENDERED ONLY WHEN THERE IS A NUMBER. A site built for a business with no phone on file (measured 2026-10-21: 19 of the 100 OBX prospects) would otherwise ship a "Call " button whose href is "tel:+1" — a dead link, and a bar that covers the legal disclosure while pointing at nothing. The form is the CTA on those sites. */
